Last year I had the chance to go to Old Car City in Georgia. I was with some other photographer friends on our way to a workshop about night photography and we decided to take a little side trip on the way. Old Car City is just what it sounds like, thousands of old, rusty, broke cars spread over several wooded acres. It's the kind of place where you have to be on the lookout for snakes. Yeah, not really my kind of place. We wandered around for several hours and still didn't see it all. The images I loved most when I finally got around to processing them were the ones of the time-worn and rusted sides of the cars. What gorgeous colors and textures! And while they made beautiful abstract images that is really not a direction I am going at this time. My solution was to combine these backgrounds with landscape imagery that I felt told a compelling story together. These are now part of a series I am calling "Rusted." I have some many more wonderful "backgrounds" that are waiting for their storytelling partners so I hope to be working on this series for a while yet.
